Katharine Chu Week 6

Top 10

  1. Your pictures this week really focused on texture and you really mastered the concept. The twig picture is the only one that doesn't really work for me, the texture is in such a small part and doesn't fully translate. The fern pictures are great and the inside circles are very representative of what we were supposed to do for this assignment.

  2. I'd like to see these photos with a higher contrast because most of these seem to rely mostly on mid tones.

  3. Most of these images are not sharp which immediately detracts their quality for me. From what I'm gathering the theme that unites all these images is that they are zoomed up and are focused on only a tiny part of the subject. However, the areas that you chose to keep in focus are so small that the entire image just feels out of focus. I would like to see either all of them intentionally blurry or a larger area in focus because the in-between feels like you almost mastered the manual setting but not quite. The strongest aspect of these images is the notion of texture and close-ups.

  4. The photos with the lock and rusted chain really highlight texture are one of our themes for this week. I think they are some of the stronger photos because they have a clear focal point. The photo of the stick could benefit from contrast to highlight the small portion that is in focus.

  5. I think the pictures of the flowers are a little opaque. I think it would have looked a little more interesting and it would have brought more focus to the flowers if you would have dodged them a little bit.

  6. The composition in some of your pictures is very strong - I especially think that the way the viewers eye is lead to the focal point in image six is very successful.

  7. The composition of your photos are great but unfortunately most of them are not sharp enough, and they are bit dark and lack of contrast. I also notice that the last picture is focus on the flower and branches in the background instead of the front ones, I am not sure if you did it intentionally or not.

  8. You did well in the depth of fields. However, the brightness of the photos should have been improved (I face the same problem.) You successfully showed texture, symmetry and other elements.

  9. I have a problem with the branch picture. I see that you tried to focus on depth of field, but having only a small part of the branch in focus is odd and unnecessary. I agree with the previous comments that some of your photos could have been sharper, which would have increased the quality of them. However, I appreciate that you focused on balance. But, I think that the second picture of the flower could have been moved slightly to the left and that the picture of the first flower should have been taken from the front. I really like how you play with the lighting, especially the sun, in the second to last photo. I also like how you focused on texture this week!

  10. These are all interesting and you pushed your depth and angles! However I think the branch image isn't as strong as the others. Although I like the strong depth of field, it's rather uninteresting. Maybe next time have a little less negative space or maybe a couple more branches.
