Valentina Gil- Week 10

  1. I'm not getting a clear story from these photos but some of them show a lot of intent. For me, the most powerful one was the second image. The girls' expressions are engaging, and the angle shows they are subservient to the viewer. The angle that you photograph your subjects can create a strong message alone, so take that into your project 3. Many of the other photos are overexposed which takes away the detail in their faces. Also the backgrounds in several of them feel distracting, they may be more successful in an open field with no cars and buildings in the background.

  2. Valentina,
I think you will benefit greatly from the portrait lighting demo. Your portraits are not as engaging as they could be. Jenna makes an excellent point about the angle from which you shoot your subject. Also consider the clothes your models wear, their hair, and especially the surroundings. Why are you shooting in a forested area? what is the intent behind that choice? I also thin technically, you must pay attention to the exposures of your images, and start using the design principles we covered. Your use of these principles need to be more apparent. Understanding light is absolutely important. When composing an image, you must think about the subject, the surrounding, the light, and every other element that makes up your image which include physical and non physical elements. You need to style and compose and coordinate your images more deliberately.

  3. Even though I didn't get the exact idea you want to express, I could see your intention of creating good portraits. However, in image 1, 2 &7, the modes' facial expressions look no different. I think the facial expressions can affect the portraits a lot. So next time maybe you would pay attention to it.

  4. These photographs aren't really speaking to me. I feel like the background is distracting to me because I can tell exactly where it is on campus, and that distracts me from your intent. The last image is also flat because the face is too brightly lit, as well as the background being too white.

  5. I agree with the previous comments, that exposure is a problem in some of your images. However, I appreciate that you experiment with different angles. I think the previous comments about incorporating more compositional elements could enhance your work, and thinking more about the details. I also agree with Jenna that the background of campus takes away from some of your photos, which goes along with being very meticulous with the details of each photo.

  6. I also don't really understand these images. The pushup one has a military vibe to it if someone was forcing her into the push up or a yelling face was off screen. But, they should show more intent on being pictures for the final project. I also agree with the previous compositional elements, always be conscious of backgrounds and trees and what they mean for your pictures. (The 4th picture with the tree off center of the hands really unbalances it)

  7. The story you are trying to tell this week is not as strong as the ones you did before. And the last three photos are too white although like the way how you try to show movements in picture #9. If you are working on your project number three the assimilation concept you talked about in class last week, I can see why you let your models wear jeans/ nike/ converse. But these elements are not enough to tell the story of assimilation.

  8. To be honest, these look more like a senior photo shoot than a cohesive narrative. I don't think that on its own is necessarily a bad thing, but you've had much stronger and interesting ideas/narratives in past weeks.
